Last weekend we hosted the 4th annual Top of the South Kettlebell Sport Open. This is the longest running kettlebell competition in New Zealand and often has the pleasure of hosting athletes from around the country. This year we had Jonny from Auckland, Victoria from Christchurch and Jennifer Hintenberger from Canada! It was an honour to host Jen while she was in Nelson for a few days and have her teach a seminar after the comp. We all learnt a lot that’s for sure.
This year was a first for New Zealand as we included TALC for women. Victoria and Sheena, both experienced lifters in OALC, gave the doubles a crack and achieved personal bests. Sheena very nearly hit the magic 100 reps with 10kg while Victoria lifted the 12’s for a solid 73 reps.
Next up on the platform was Jonny and I. Jonny was competing with 20kg for the first time and managed to knock out 43 reps. Weighing in at under 60kg that is no small feat. I was competing with 24’s for the first time since Nov 2014 and the main aim for this comp was to pace my way through and finish strong which seemed to work. Onward and upward.
Next up we had some 5 min snatch sets where Nikki, Sheena and Victoria put up some good numbers and made for close competition. Jennifer was here to lift 20kg snatch and despite having a very disrupted prep she managed to hit a PB with an unreal 175 reps! This set was great to watch (and judge) and was a solid illustration of what she was to teach that afternoon. If you ever get a chance to host Jen at a comp or attend a seminar I’d recommend you jump at the opportunity.
Thanks to those that helped organise, those that came to lift and be with us here in Nelson, and special thanks to Jen for an unforgettable weekend.
