Saturday saw the Physical Culture Kettlebell Sport Open take place for the second year. This year we were blessed to have three fantastic lifters come down from the Auckland Kettlebell Club to join us and provide some great competition!
The day got underway with the novice StrongSport event, with Dee, Nikki, Lois and Olivia all taking part for the first time. The Jerk was first and Dee and Nikki hit 65 and 63 reps respectively. This was to set the tone for the rest of the events as we had some extremely competitive flights. Next up was the mum/daughter combo of Olivia and Lois, with only three reps separating them in the Jerk it was going to be a close finish in the Clean event.
The next two flights were women’s Long Cycle, Sheena and Tam lifting 20kg and Saku and Gayle lifting 16kg. Tam got off to a fast start in her set but when she had to switch early Sheena managed to catch up and it was looking like being another very close affair. A massive effort on the second hand from Tam saw her through to 80 reps and unfortunately Sheena couldn’t hold the pace, terminating her set early at a PB of 70 reps. Saku and Gayle lifted very strongly for 87 and 68 reps respectively and they will be ones to keep an eye on come the NZGSA NI Champs in August!
